Topologies:
Bus; all devices connect to a common shared cable (backbone). Uses
CSMA/CD.
Ring; wired in a circle. Each node is connected to its neighbors on
either side, and data passes around the ring in one direction.
Star; requires that all devices connect to a central hub; may use
CSMA/CD. Hubs employ shared Ethernet, which is a half-duplex method
of transmitting and receiving. Switched Ethernet uses full duplex to
eliminate collisions. Because half duplex operation is required for
CSMA/CD, full duplex is not possible with a 10BaseT hub. Full duplex
operates with the CSMA/CD circuit disabled. Full duplex eliminates
contention (devices competing for media access) on point-to-point
links. Full duplex Ethernet has both loopback and collision
detection disabled.
Mesh; is an all channel topology in that every device is directly
connected to every other device on the network providing redundancy.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol); a suite of
protocols contained within a four-layer protocol stack developed as
part of the research done by the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA).
TCP/IP Protocol Stack:
Application
TCP UDP
IP ICMP ARP
