Webmasters Training
Webmasters need more than just HTML training.
In the strictest sense of the word, a webmaster
handles the technical aspects of a Web site. This
includes network and system administration,
security, database integration and programming.
Depending on the company or organization sponsoring
a site, however, a webmaster might also have to
handle design, editorial, business management and
customer feedback functions as well. In this
diversity lies the difficulty in providing webmaster
training and defining certification requirements.
For example, it*s not unusual to find advanced HTML
training programs labeled “webmaster training.”
While webmasters do need to know HTML, knowing HTML
does not a webmaster make. Consequently, anyone
shopping for webmaster training is well-advised to
check the scope of course content carefully.
Product-specific and general classes are widely available in private training
centers and university extensions across the country. By necessity, most
webmasters are self-trained, on demand, in response to rapid-fire changes in
technology and the whims of management. They find many resources online at
vendor sites, and at others like WebMonkey (http://www. webmonkey.com) and
Webpedia (http:// www.webpedia.com).
For beginners, a well-organized outline is available from The Webmaster*s Guild
(http://www.webmaster.org/ training). Interface Technologies Online Training
Center (http://www.iftech.com/ oltc/webdev/webdev0.stm) offers excellent course
material on Web development free of charge. For “formal” online training, ZD
University (http://www.zdu.com), E-Zone (http://www.mcp.com/ezone) and Digital
Think (http:// www.digitalthink.com) boast courses that include virtual
interaction with a human instructor and classmates. While most .org/ training). Interface Technologies Online Training

too busy working to worry about certification, the topic is bandied about quite
a bit in some circles. Certification would make life easier for employers
looking to verify that a prospect has the skill set required. Venders such as
Sun, Novell and Microsoft already have certifications related to their specific
products, of course, but a universal “vendor- neutral” seal of approval has yet
to emerge. A joint educational program developed by Novell and Netscape
(http://www. netboss.com) is arousing suspicion among independent training
providers who question their ability to deliver a truly vendor-neutral program.
The stakes are high, as a widely-accepted webmaster certification like Novell*s
CNE program would be a substantial cash cow for training providers and study
guide publishers. Many private training companies and universities have
developed their own flavors of webmaster certifications. Net Guru Technologies
(http://www.ngt. com), for instance, offers a five- day Webmaster Engineer
Certification Course regionally, and its Webmaster Administrator Certification
Exam is administered nationwide at Sylvan Prometric (http:// www.prometric.com)
testing centers. New Jersey Institute of Technology (http:// www.njit.edu/CPE/
webmaster/program.html) offers its continuing education students a 90-hour
program encompassing Web author, Web developer and Web site manager functions.
Many webmasters, pointing to the extremely dynamic nature of the field, are
concerned that certification efforts will be futile. Even certification
proponents agree that certification will so quickly become obsolete as to
warrant constant updating. Yet the handful of professional organizations
representing webmasters recognize that if certification is inevitable, they must
stay closely involved to protect webmaster interests. As a result, several of
the webmaster groups have come down in favor of model certification programs
from private Internet training specialists Net Guru Technologies or US Web
(http:// www.usweb.com). Still other webmaster groups are leaning more toward
programs rooted in the academic sector.
